To make the most of our time in Cuba, you’ll have the beautiful morning light to visually explore the village. As the sun starts to get hot, we’ll critique your top photo from the previous day and then offer a short lecture on Cuban culture and visual storytelling techniques.
Most of our photo shoots are scheduled for later-afternoon. Remember that the sun sets at 6 PM, so this gives us time to scope out our preferred locations before the “golden hour.”
At the end of each day, you’ll have time to pick your top ten images plus one image that you want Trina and German to critique the next day. We’ll make a slideshow of the top images from the week that will play in the art gallery in Chivirico.
Wednesday February 13th, 2019
We’ll arrive at the Santiago de Cuba Antonio Maceo International Airport and make our way, by air-conditioned bus, along the gorgeous coast to the Los Galeones hotel in Chivirico.
After lunch, you can spend the afternoon relaxing by the pool or make the journey down to the intimate beach. May we suggest a delicious piña colada or refreshing mojito at the beach bar?! Later, meet your workshop instructors for a welcome session, a cup of coffee in the village and group dinner at the hotel as the sun sets over the spectacular Sierra Maestra mountain range.
Thursday February 14th, 2019
After breakfast, we’ll join German for a discussion about life in the village of Chivirico. German and Goldie will teach you some key Spanish phrases to help you interact with the people you meet. Next, Trina will teach you how to use your camera more effectively. She’ll explain how you can improve your sense of composition so that you can tell better stories with your photographs.
We’ll grab lunch at the hotel, and then we’ll meet up with our local Cuban guides and interpreters to photographically explore the village and meet the residents.
Friday February 15th, 2019
We will start the morning with a critique of your best image from Thursday, and then Trina will teach you more in-depth visual storytelling techniques.
After lunch, we’ll head to the art gallery for an interactive Cuban dance performance! We’ll then meet up with our local Cuban guides. We’ll match you with a Cuban family to give you a truly authentic experience of life in Cuba.
Saturday February 16th, 2019
After breakfast, we’ll travel to downtown Santiago and spend the day exploring the vibrant and historic city of music as one travel guide described as “the New Orleans of the Caribbean”. Treat yourself to Cuba’s best Mojito’s on the veranda of Casa Grande Hotel in the central square. After that we will visit the UNESCO protected Castillo del Morro fortress on the way back to our hotel.
Sunday February 17th, 2019
One on one critiques with Trina and Scott and continue working on your personal assignment.
Monday February 18th, 2019
After our sunrise photo shoot, we’ll continue the morning with a photoshoot in the village so you can go deeper into making a photo essay.
In the afternoon, we will review your Top 10 images from Santiago. There will also be time in the afternoon to have one of your photographs professionally retouched by Scott. Using Photoshop, Scott will show you how you can take your photos to the next level.
Tuesday February 19th, 2019
After a critique of your best images from Monday, German will teach you about Cuban art. You’ll get to meet some local artists and view their latest paintings and sculptures.
In the afternoon, you’ll have the opportunity to photograph professional dancers on the beach at Sierra Mar – the sister resort of Los Galeones. These dancers are stunning and they know how to move! Trina will demonstrate how to work with sunset lighting to artistically capture the dancers. We will celebrate the finale of our workshop at Sierra Mar’s ecological restaurant.
